(More customer reviews)I purchased this USB AC adapter for the convenience of being able to take my PRS 650 on trips, as I don't own a laptop and the PRS 650, otherwise, requires an Internet connection to charge the device. It would have been great if the PRS 650 did not come with that limitation, but it does which, I guess, makes this optional accessory something of a necessity for those who can't always be tethered to a PC but still want the convenience of being able to use their e-readers while on extended stays away from home.
A side benefit to owning this accessory is that the manufacturer claims it provides a faster charge than the USB charger that actually comes with the PRS 650. A full charge of the e-reader takes about 3 hours using the supplied USB charger, and only about 2 hours to get a full charge using this USB AC adapter (with the e-reader completely shutdown or off). In addition, you can still operate and read books on the e-reader using the latter accessory, while you can't using the USB charger that comes supplied with the PRS 650.
When charging the device via computer, it's easy to tell when the e-reader is in charge mode and when the device is fully charged, because that information is graphically displayed on the e-reader screen. However, the e-reader screen remains blank when using this optional accessory to charge the device. Still, you can discern that the e-reader is charging while in "off mode" because the red power light at the lefthand side of the top of the PRS 650 comes on. It shuts off once the device is fully charged. I'm not crazy about that inconvenience, but it's a relatively minor inconvenience, I think.
Personally, I kind of wish I did not have to purchase this accessory at all, but it wasn't outrageously expensive. I ordered it online, because I did not find it available in stores that sold the PRS 650 in my area.
