Leisure Case for Sony Reader PRS-505 - SALE!
The Leisure Case for the Sony Reader PRS-505 does work to protect the reader from impact, and moisture -- both to SOME degree. Obviously it's not water-proof.
I would feel comfortable making use of my reader in this Leisure Case during a rainstorm (while under an umbrella) or at a poolside. I would not float on a raft and use it because the case is just not THAT water resistant or water tight. I don't believe that it's meant to be. One tumble into the pool and it might not get soaked if you grabbed it right away, but I don't think that this case would not keep water from coming in contact with your device through the zipper line. It would slow the water down, but I wouldn't count on the reader staying completely dry under that circumstance. The zipper is very close to the surrounding padding so you might have upwards of some number of seconds before water made it's way in. I won't be checking that though :)
I bought the case to keep my reader dry on wet days while waiting under my umbrella for the bus. It works beautifully for that purpose and I feel confident that my reader will stay dry and safe during any rainstorm -- maybe even without the umbrella.
Now for what I don't like. I understand that the case is designed to be water resistant and that to that purpose it should be "closed" to the elements. But that resistance does not permit the meto power the reader off and on without unzipping the case fully and raising the reader from the case. As an example, if I were going to walk to the bus stop during a rain shower, I would have to remove it from it's case at some point -- maybe before I went outside? Or, I would have to fumble around with taking it out of the case while juggling the umbrella once I got to the bus stop. That translates into some amount of time that my reader is ON and eating battery juice while I'm not using it. And if I want to listen to podcasts or music (MP3) which I've loaded, I would have to leave it unzipped at the bottom in order to connect my headphones. Again, I am not dense and I "get" that the device has to be closed to be water resistant -- but had I known or considered these little limitations, ... well, I probably would have purchased it anyway. It just would have been nice to know. I might have given the case a 4.5 rather than a 4 but the rating system does not permit that. It's very compact and the padding is great. I do NOT worry about dropping it in this case -- unless you were to drop it on it's face onto something that could jab the face. Overall, I think it's a great travel case and I'm glad I purchased it. I don't LOVE it but I do like it a lot.
